Some Dynamics of Domestic Violence:

1. The overall aim of the abuse is to assert power and maintain control.
2. Abusive relationships generally do not start off violent, but does so increasing over time, as the perpetrator exerts more and more control over the victim.
3. Abuse is generally one way, although victims sometimes strike back in self defense.
4. Physical violence if often recurrent. Apologies and promises of hope and change often follow a violent episode.
5. Sometimes after an episode of violence the victim may feel hopeful that the situation will change due to the perpetrator promises of change and apologies.
